Hi

I set up a Lenny system for someone. One thing he wants to be able to
do is to download albums from the Picasa service of Google. I have
already set up pictures collections using digikam, and would prefer to
use it.

Digikam is generally the only KDE program used, so I would consider
upgrading to kde2 if it helped. Though aparantly this is not supported
there (in kipi-plugins, specifically). I also heard that there mightt be
probles in such an upgrade if you have tags with non-ascii characters.

Tzafrir, I am having a hard time understanding exactly what you mean.

Does he want to make an album of his Digikam photos available via
Picasa web service, or does he want to import a Picasa album to
Digikam? Are we talking about Picasa the local app, or Picasa the web
service in that case?

Do you mean KDE 4?

The Qt4 port of Digikam is not ready. I _think_ that the 0.10 branch
will be all Qt4, but I am not sure. The specific component that that
interested me that looked like it was to remain Qt3 has in fact been
ported to Qt4, but there way be a few Qt3 components left over.

Like you, I have many Hebrew tags and I do have a few problems with
UTF-8 support, but it 'mostly works'. Deleting and reimporting an
image is a known issue, I would check if there is a bug already filed
but I promised the wife that I'd not do that for a little while! I do
intend on moving our home system to the 0.10 branch when it becomes
available so I can update you if you want.

Does he want to make an album of his Digikam photos available via

No. There's already a plugin to do that. Though I haven't tested it.

Yes

The web service ("webalbums").

Right.

I only mentioned it as an option, not as a required solution.

Can you link to such an album? I will try to import it and see how it goes.

Replying on list so that others can help contribute, with private links removed.

I do not see any facility to download entire albums from Picasa, just
individual photos.

Does the Picasa client have a built-in facility for downloading entire albums?

No: You will have to script something
Yes: You will have to either reverse-engineer the API or google for
someone who has already done that.

$ apt-cache search picasa
kipi-plugins - image manipulation/handling plugins for KIPI aware programs
python-gdata - Google Data Python client library

kipi-plugins is due to the picasa export plugin.
python-gdata:

pydoc gdata.photos.service

shows some interesting stuff ('pydoc gdata.photos' mainly refers you to
it for documentation)

I didn't have time to play with it or find any useful usage of it for
downloading, though.

Some quick googling led me to believe that the kipi plugin is export
only, as you seem to confirm. Try to see if the API is public and if
not, then scripting something to scrape from the web may be easier
that reverse engineering the API.
