Hi,
I am trying to launch audacity on a stretch amd64 system, and
the following happens:

1. I get a popup with text "Audacity could not find a place to store
temporary files. Please enter an appropriate directory in the
preferences dialog."

Click ok, then:

2. An error popup appears stating: "AudioIO.cpp(2363): assert "false"
failed in getPlayDevIndex()." A backtrace is available but
doesn't reveal anything obvious to me.

Click continue, then:

3. An error popup appears stating: "AudioIO.cpp(2416): assert "false"
failed in getRecordDevIndex()."

Continue then segfaults.

The googleman doesn't provide any clues. Ideas?

Many thanks,
Russell

You made me go and look. Audacity launches just fine running stretch
amd64. Are you joined to the audio group? Ric

This is an agressively cut down system w/o gnome, kde, etc. Just wdm
and fvwm. I have pulse installed and it is running. So I am missing
an early dependency somewhere. I wonder what that could be?

Thanks,

As a start, have you run
#aptitude show audacity
to see what the initial situation is?

And, again, is your user a member of the "audio" group in /etc/group?
Without permissions, you get no audio. This doesn't depend on any window
manager, it is system. Ric

Bingo! I had changed the uid for my account a while back and
didn't think to have a look at /var/tmp. Now at least the situation
is documented so that it can be found by google and friends.

Thanks Sven!

Russell
Thank you! I've had the same issue, same reason - uid changed - and this has
been the only place where I've found the solution!

Bests!
